On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court ruled that marriage equality is a constitutionally protected right allowing same-sex couples to marry nationwide.
Shortly after the Supreme Court's decision, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a statement stating that state workers can refuse to issue same-sex marriage licenses if doing so is contrary to his or her religious beliefs.
However, there is a caveat. State workers who refuse to issue same-sex marriage licenses may face litigation and fines.
The bottom line is that despite how one may feel about same-sex marriage, same-sex marriage is now a constitutionally protected right.
The real challenge for some now is to understand and accept the difference between what is “legal” and what is “moral.” The legality of a law does not always coincide with your moral beliefs. Can you imagine a world where one person or a group of persons, created laws based on their moral beliefs? I definitely can’t. But to say the least, that place would not be called America.
